Why is being Lukewarm worse than being Cold?

"I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth." Revelation 3:15-16

Last night at Relentless we talked about Lukewarm Christians and how that statement is a bit of an oxymoron.

In Revelation 3 it says I would rather you hot or cold just not lukewarm and I was thinking about why Jesus would prefer us cold above lukewarm.

The conclusion that I came to was that if you are cold spiritually you probably are pretty convinced and outspoken about how you don't think you need a Savior. You probably don't go around acting like you know Jesus. Once you do realize your need for a Savior, I bet it is pretty stark, pretty obvious, passionate, undeniable.

Where as if you are Lukewarm--maybe you think you are just "ok" like you know enough about church and God and do enough "good" things that you have convinced yourself that you will squeak by and into heaven -no problem. Lukewarm people are probably in denial of there need for change, maybe it is harder for them to see their need because they think it has already been taken care of.

I guess I would just hate for people who think that they have been living a life pleasing enough to God to come to the door of heaven and hear " I never knew You".

Maybe this whole idea of lukewarm is to light a fire under the butts of you and me Christ follower just as much as those who are lukewarm to Jesus. Because we need to be passionate about sharing what a true life lived for Jesus actually looks like.

I don't want any of my friends who think they are just "ok" to get to heaven and find out they aren't.

Do you?
